One device that fixes everything and gives everyone the same results would make choosing wonderfully simple. It would also need to exist.

XERF doesn't need that job description to be worth discussing. Human studies offer support for skin tightening, and the device gives physicians options for treating different areas. We can leave the superpowers out of the brochure.

Does XERF work, or just look good in reviews?

One study followed 39 participants after two XERF sessions. The researchers reported improvements in facial skin laxity at 30 and 90 days after the final treatment. That supports a tightening benefit in the group studied. The study had no control group and only short-term follow-up, so it cannot guarantee the same result for everyone. Weiss et al., 2026

Photos in a review may give you a sense of what's possible. Your face isn't a copy of the one in the picture.

What are the benefits of XERF?

Skin tightening without needles or surgery

XERF delivers monopolar radiofrequency energy through the skin to address firmness. That makes it an option for people considering an energy-based treatment without needles or surgery. This is a useful feature in its own right; it doesn't need to become a claim that the results match surgery. Cynosure Lutronic

Our guide to XERF explains how dual-frequency RF works.

You want firmer skin. A whole new face wasn't on the list.

Suppose you'd like to address your jawline, but you still like the fullness of your cheeks. Those wishes don't conflict. You want the plan for your jawline to take your cheek fullness into account, too.

According to the manufacturer, XERF has 3 depth modes and 10 intensity levels. The physician can use these options to choose treatment locations, modes and energy levels based on the facial assessment. XERF device information

The settings aren't a checklist to complete during treatment. Your physician chooses which to use in each area.

Sometimes the plan may include leaving an area untreated. The reason for leaving it out deserves as much attention as the reason for treating another area, particularly where existing facial fullness matters. We explore that in our article on XERF and facial hollowing.

The outcome still depends on the treatment plan and the individual's response.

What about skin quality?

A retrospective study of 16 women who had one XERF session found improvements in assessments of wrinkles, skin evenness, pore appearance and oiliness. The authors described the findings as preliminary and called for confirmation in larger, controlled studies. Erlich et al., 2026

A closer look at the fine lines

The jawline is one part of the picture. Fine lines deserve a closer look too, through before-and-after photographs from XERF cases at BEHAP.

And how did people feel afterwards?

People we asked at the end of their XERF appointment at BEHAP told us they were satisfied with the service.

XERF's limitations don't disappear in the settings menu

More settings don't make it right for everyone

Adjustability gives a physician more options, but those options still need to match the concern.

If your wish list is long, break it down into specific concerns. Handing the whole list to XERF and expecting it to sort everything out is asking a lot.

Three months of follow-up isn't a lifetime forecast

The two studies discussed above followed participants for about three months and involved relatively small groups. They tell us about changes during that period. They don't establish that everyone will see the same degree of improvement or that the results will last equally long.

The same goes for session counts. One study used two treatments; the other used one. Those are study designs, not schedules to photocopy for every patient.

Needle-free doesn't tell you how you'll feel during or after treatment

Treatment without needles is not a promise of no pain or no side effects. The retrospective study of 16 women reported mild, temporary adverse effects, even though treatment was generally well tolerated. Erlich et al., 2026

If comfort during treatment or recovery time affects your decision, “comfortable” isn't a complete briefing. You should know what the proposed plan involves and what you need to prepare for.

Who is XERF for, and what can you reasonably expect?

XERF is an option to consider for people who want to address facial skin laxity and are interested in an energy-based treatment without needles or surgery. Suitability depends on the area of concern, skin condition, facial structure, treatment history and goals considered together.

The evidence supports its use for skin tightening, with preliminary findings on skin quality as well. The extent of any change, the number of sessions and how long the results last still need to be considered individually.

A few more questions about XERF

Does XERF actually work, or is it just hype?

Human studies have reported improvements in facial skin laxity, with preliminary findings on skin quality too. That gives us evidence beyond the hype. The studies discussed here are small and have short follow-up periods; they do not guarantee results for everyone.

What are the main benefits of XERF?

XERF uses radiofrequency energy to address skin firmness without needles or surgery. It also offers depth modes and energy levels that a physician can select following an assessment. There are preliminary findings on changes in skin quality as well.

Can you have XERF if you have a small face or hollow cheeks?

This needs an individual assessment, considering the tightening goal alongside existing facial fullness. Different areas may be approached differently or left untreated based on that assessment. Read more about XERF and facial hollowing.
