What is Programme EXION Fractional RF, and can it help acne scars?

Programme EXION Fractional RF uses a needle-based applicator on BTL’s platform. Fine needles deliver monopolar radiofrequency energy into the skin. The resulting heat stimulates collagen remodelling, making it an option for the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles and uneven texture. [1] [2]

Acne-scar care starts with an assessment of the scars and the skin in each area. Your doctor considers your goals and skin response before choosing the needle tip, depth and energy settings for your treatment plan.

Does Programme EXION Fractional RF hurt? What to expect

During RF microneedling, you may feel needle sensations, heat or stinging in some areas. Appropriate numbing preparation and telling the care team how you feel are part of the treatment experience. [3] [5]

    Share the areas that concern you, your skin history, medicines and previous procedures. Your doctor explains the options, expected changes and care plan before treatment.

  2. Prepare the treatment area

    The skin is cleansed and numbing is used when needed. The needle tip and settings are selected for the area and your skin.

  3. Treat and communicate throughout

Redness, swelling or tiny needle marks can occur after treatment. How quickly the skin settles depends on the treated area, settings and individual response. If you have a meeting, photo shoot or important event, mention it before choosing a date so you can allow time for recovery. [3] [5]

Direct early research on acne scars

Duncan’s 2024 pilot study evaluated the device model used for Programme EXION Fractional RF in 14 participants: five with acne scars, five with wrinkles and four with abdominal stretch marks. Participants received three treatments with anaesthesia, followed by photographic assessments after the course. [2]

The study reported an improvement in appearance, but it was small, had no comparison group and the author disclosed a relationship with BTL. It provides preliminary evidence to inform consideration of the programme, rather than a guarantee of results or proof of superiority over another device.
